For those who prefer walk-in service, we have listed the physical address as well as the postal address (sometimes they are the same) for the main government agencies where records of birth, death, marriage and divorce are held.

(i). NEW YORK STATE
The New York Department of Health is responsible for all vital records in the state of New York apart from births, deaths and marriages in the five (5) boroughs of New York City – i.e. Manhattan, Staten Island, The Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn.

State office has records of BIRTHS and DEATHS since 1881. For records before 1914 in Albany, Buffalo, and Yonkers, or before 1880 in any other city, write to Registrar of Vital Statistics in city where event occurred. For the rest of the State, except New York City, write to the State office.
For MARRIAGE records from 1880-1907 and licenses issued in the cities of Albany, Buffalo, or Yonkers, apply to:

Buffalo: City Clerk, City Hall, Buffalo, NY 14202;
Yonkers: Registrar of Vital Statistics, Health Center Building, Yonkers, NY 10701
County DIVORCE records can be obtained from the County Clerk in the county where the divorce was granted.
(ii). NEW YORK CITY
The Office of Vital Records issues BIRTH AND DEATH certificates for individuals who were born in one of the five boroughs of New York City (Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, or Staten Island) since 1910.

New York City MARRIAGE RECORDS from 1996 to present can be obtained in person from any office of the New York CITY CLERK. (Note: Marriage records from 1930 to 1955 can be obtained solely at the Manhattan Office)
